Day trip or overnight: how many hours each part needs
Most people see Tay Ninh in one long day from Ho Chi Minh City, and for the mountain and the temple that works. Add the national park, the lake or the Lang Sen wetland and the arithmetic changes. Here is the time each piece takes.
The hours, piece by piece
| Piece | Time it takes | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ho Chi Minh City to the former Tay Ninh | 2 to 3 hours each way | About 100 km by road |
| Ba Den Mountain, summit and pagodas | 3 to 5 hours | Longer at weekends and festivals |
| Cao Dai Holy See with a ceremony | 1 to 2 hours | Arrive before the ceremony |
| Lunch in Long Hoa or town | About 1 hour | Vegetarian food court at Long Hoa market |
| Lo Go–Xa Mat National Park | Half a day | About 30 km beyond town |
| Dau Tieng Lake | 2 to 3 hours | About 45 minutes from town by car |
| Lang Sen wetland | 4 to 6 hours on site | About 140 km from HCMC, opposite end of the province |
Road times come from the sources below. Time on site is our planning estimate for an unhurried visit, not an official figure.

The classic day: Holy See and Ba Den
Leave Ho Chi Minh City by 7:00. You reach the Holy See around 9:30 to 10:00, which leaves time to look round the compound and be in the gallery for the 12:00 ceremony. After lunch, the mountain takes the afternoon: up to the summit by cable car, down to the pagodas on the Tam An line, back to the foot on the Chua Hang line. Leave by 17:00 and you are back in the city between 19:30 and 20:00.
The weak point is weather. In the rainy season, from May to November, afternoon downpours are common, and that is exactly when this plan puts you on the summit. The alternative is to reverse it: mountain first at opening time, Holy See at noon, home by late afternoon. That needs a 5:00 start, which is why many people prefer to sleep nearby instead.

Why an overnight changes the visit
One night near the mountain or in the former provincial town turns the day around. You can ride the cable car at opening time, when the summit is coolest, clearest and quietest, then see the Holy See at 6:00 or 18:00 instead of at noon with the tour groups. You can also add one of the northern places, Lo Go–Xa Mat or Dau Tieng Lake, without racing the light.
Rooms in the former provincial town were VND 500,000 to 1,000,000 a night in 2024, with simple guesthouses from VND 150,000 to 300,000. Rooms near Ba Den fill up in the first lunar month and around the Le via Ba festival; book ahead then.

Sample plans
One day, no car
Coach to the Holy See gate; noon ceremony; lunch at Long Hoa; bus 70-2 or a ride-hailing car to Ba Den; afternoon on the mountain; coach back from Ba Den or town. About 13 hours door to door.
Two days, with a driver
Day one: leave the city mid-morning, Holy See for the noon ceremony, Dau Tieng Lake in the late afternoon, night near the mountain. Day two: Ba Den at opening time, then Lo Go–Xa Mat National Park, return to the city in the evening.
Lang Sen on its own
Leave Ho Chi Minh City by 6:00, or sleep in Tan An the night before. Spend four to six hours at the reserve, including the boat. Return in the evening. Do not try to add Ba Den: it is at the other end of the province.

What does not fit in one day
- Ba Den, the Holy See and Lang Sen together. They are on opposite sides of a province of about 8,500 square kilometres.
- Ba Den, the Holy See and Lo Go–Xa Mat with time for a boat or cycle in the park.
- Any plan on a festival day at Ba Den that includes a second major stop. Queues can take hours.
- A day plan that relies on the last local bus back in the evening.

A simple decision
- 01
Count your days
One day: mountain and temple. Two days: add the north. Lang Sen: its own day.
- 02
Check the calendar
Avoid the first lunar month and public holidays at Ba Den if you want short queues.
- 03
Choose the ceremony
Noon on a day trip; 6:00 or 18:00 if you sleep nearby.
- 04
Decide on transport
Coach for the classic day; a driver for anything else.
- 05
Confirm the moving parts
Cable car hours and fares, bus times and festival dates change.
Tours or independent?
Organised day trips from Ho Chi Minh City usually combine the Holy See at noon, Ba Den, and often a stop at the Cu Chi tunnels on the way. They solve transport but fix the timing, which means the noon gallery crowd and an afternoon on the mountain. Independent travel by coach costs less and lets you choose the hours, at the price of more planning. This guide does not sell or recommend either; it gives you the hours so you can compare.
Common questions
Questions readers ask
Is one day enough for Tay Ninh?
For Ba Den Mountain and the Holy See, yes, if you start early. For the national park, the lake or Lang Sen, add a day or plan a separate trip.
Should I see the Holy See or Ba Den first?
On a day trip, the Holy See at noon and Ba Den in the afternoon is the usual order. In the rainy season, the mountain first in the morning is the safer bet for views, if you can start very early.
Where should I stay overnight?
Near Ba Den Mountain or in the former provincial town, for the northern sights; in Tan An for Lang Sen.
