Long queue of visitors waiting at the cable car station at the foot of Ba Den Mountain

When not to go, and who should choose something else

Tay Ninh is easy to reach and easy to get wrong. The same mountain can be an hour of clear views or a day of queues and cloud, depending on the date. This page collects the bad timings and the travellers for whom another trip fits better.

Weather that spoils a visit

From May to November an afternoon downpour is common in the south, often with cloud on Ba Den's summit. If the view from the summit is the point of your trip, an afternoon ride in the rainy season is a poor gamble. Go at opening time or choose a dry-season date.

In the dry season the problem is different. March and April are the hottest months in the south, and the summit plaza and the Holy See courtyard have little shade at midday. Lang Sen can run low on water late in a dry year: in 2016 its core dried out and staff had to pump water in. For the wetland, avoid the late dry season and aim for September to November.

Times of day to avoid

  • 12:00 at the Holy See on a weekend, if you want to see the ceremony rather than the backs of other visitors.
  • Late afternoon on Ba Den in the rainy season, when cloud and rain close in.
  • Leaving Ho Chi Minh City between 7:00 and 9:00 on a weekday, or returning on a Sunday afternoon.
  • After 18:00 for the local bus back; services thin out early.

Who should choose another trip

  • Travellers looking for a quiet hike. Ba Den is now mainly a cable car and summit resort with pilgrim paths beside it.
  • People with one day who want the mountain, the temple and the wetland. They are at opposite ends of the merged province.
  • Visitors uncomfortable in large religious crowds, during the festival months.
  • Anyone whose main interest is the Cu Chi tunnels. They are in Ho Chi Minh City; a separate trip.
  • Visitors without transport who want the north or Lang Sen. Public transport does not reach them.

When a short stop is enough

If you are passing through on the way to Cambodia via Moc Bai, the border gate is about 70 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City and well south of the mountain. A detour to the Holy See for the noon ceremony is possible; a full Ba Den visit as well usually means a very long day or a night in the province.

If you have already seen a large cable car and summit complex elsewhere in Vietnam and are not interested in the pagodas, the Holy See alone is the part of Tay Ninh that has no equivalent elsewhere.

If you cannot avoid a peak date

  1. Arrive at opening time, around dawn, and ride to the summit first.
  2. Book coach seats and rooms ahead.
  3. Carry water, snacks and cash; summit queues for food are long.
  4. Keep bags closed and in front of you; petty crime rises around Tet.
  5. Leave a wide margin for the return; traffic near the mountain is controlled on festival days.

Common questions

Questions readers ask

What is the worst time to visit Ba Den Mountain?

The first lunar month and national holidays, for crowds; rainy-season afternoons, for views.

Is Tay Ninh worth it in the rainy season?

Yes, with mornings on the mountain. The rain usually comes in the afternoon.

Should I skip Lang Sen in the dry season?

Not necessarily: birds concentrate then. But the late dry season of a drought year can mean low water. The flood season, September to November, is the safer choice for scenery.
